Radon Gas

Radon is a colourless and odourless radioactive gas that is released from the breakdown of radium that is naturally present in rock, soil, and groundwater. In the outdoors radon is not an issue, due to dilution with the outside air. However in enclosed spaces, such as a home, school or commercial building, radon can accumulate to levels of concern and long-term exposure to radon is a significant health risk.

Typically, the ingress of radon into a building occurs via cracks in floor slabs, basement walls and gaps around utility connections, etc. Thus, levels of radon can vary significantly from building to building.

Elevated levels of radon have been mapped throughout British Columbia and while there are many areas shown as a low risk for radon, Health Canada encourages ownersto test for radon. For testing radon in any type of building, it is recommended to use a C-NRPP┬╣ certified radon measurement professional. In the event of elevated radon levels, a C-NRPP certified radon mitigation professional should be consulted, to advise on proper mitigation techniques.
